Protecting your vehicle from the sun

Your vehicle puts up with a lot on an average day, especially during summer, when it is often forced to deal with hot, bright, and dry conditions that can cause extensive damage. The least you can do is provide your beloved ride with some occasional TLC and the following tips are guaranteed to help.

Treat your fabrics

If you don’t know already, find out what your vehicle’s interior fabrics are made from by consulting your Vehicle Owner’s Manual. Next, visit your local automotive supply store, purchase products designed to nourish and protect those specific types of fabrics, and apply them according to the directions. While these treatments will usually need to be reapplied every 6-12 months, doing so will help keep your ride looking great for years to come.

Park smart

Whenever possible, park your vehicle under cover or in as much shade as you can find, as this will dramatically reduce the length of time that it spends exposed to those harsh UV rays. If you will be parked outside for an extended period of time, keep in mind how the sun (and shade) will move over the coming hours so that you can plan your parking spot for maximum benefit.

Invest in body coatings

In the same way that sunscreen can do wonders to protect your skin, having a protective coating applied to your vehicle can prevent those pigments, polymers, and plastics from degrading prematurely. While there are a huge range of products available nowadays, one of the simplest and most effective is good old fashioned wax, so do yourself a favour and have a wax coating applied to your ride ASAP.

Cover up

One of the most effective ways to reduce sun damage to your ride is by covering it entirely, with one of the best approaches being to invest in a car cover specifically designed to suit your make and model. Alternately, simply cover your front and rear windscreens with a set of inexpensive foldable sun-shades, or if nothing else, use towels, clothes, or blankets to cover the seats and steering wheel.

Wash it regularly

While it is never a good idea to leave your ride dirty for long, this is especially true during summer, when any dirt, mud, or crud left to accumulate can quickly become baked on there. For best results, wash your vehicle at least once every 2 weeks, as well as within a day or two of getting home from any road-trip or adventure.
