There is no better way to make the most of the warmer weather this summer than to do some exploring and you won’t find many better options than those right here in Alberta. Here we will look at five of the best summer road trips that our beautiful Province has to offer.
The Icefields Parkway
This iconic 232km drive stretches from Lake Louise to Jasper and is a must for anyone who loves the great outdoors. You will be treated to stunning mountain views, pristine lakes, an abundance of wildlife, and dozens of ancient glaciers, including the world famous Athabasca Glacier. The Columbia Icefields Skywalk is another of the many highlights, where you can soak up breathtaking views from the top of a 918 foot cliff.
Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park
This Alberta gem is located roughly 100km south-east of Lethbridge and is one of Canada’s most impressive historical sites. Home to thousands of petroglyphs (including some of the oldest in North America), Writing-on-Stone is considered a highly significant place for the Blackfoot people who have called this area home for thousands of years. You will find great camping, a wide range of hiking trails, and fantastic birding opportunities, not to mention Interpretive Programs that your entire family will love.
Drumheller
If you are a fan of cute towns, like interesting landscapes, or have kids who love dinosaurs, head to Drumheller, which is located roughly 135km east of Calgary. There is a beautiful river, one of the world’s most famous dinosaur museums (The Royal Tyrrell), as well as the enchanting and mysterious hoodoos, while an array of colourful murals cover much of the town site. Be sure to stop by the nearby ghost town of Wayne before you leave the area as well, as its Last Chance Saloon is one of Alberta’s best kept secrets.
Kananaskis Country
Those that like to hike will love Kananaskis Country, as it boasts one of Canada’s most varied and impressive networks of trails and is just 85km west of Calgary. You’ll find plenty of great places to camp; two 18-hole golf courses; world-class climbing; fantastic fishing; and may see anything from deer, moose, and bears to eagles, cougars, and elk. Family-friendly Interpretive Programs are also on offer at many of the campgrounds throughout Kananaskis all summer long.
Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump
History buffs will be in heaven at this incredible Albertan destination 71km west of Lethbridge, which has been designated as an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can learn about the local Indigenous history and culture at the ever-popular Interpretative Centre, while kids will have the chance to dress up in a real wolf or bison hide and take part in one of the many historical re-enactments. Expect to be blown away by the stunning views as well, because this is Alberta at its rugged and beautiful best.
