As hard as it may be to admit it, summer is coming to an end, which means that you and your ride need to be ready for those cold and damp conditions ahead. Here we will look at a few of the simplest, easiest, and most important ways to ensure that whatever you drive is ready to thrive all fall and winter long.
Update your wipers
Fall typically comes with a whole lot of rain, which can undermine driving visibility considerably, making it vital that your windscreen wipers are primed and ready to keep your windscreen clear in even the heaviest downpour. If your wipers are bent, warped, or otherwise damaged, replace them ASAP; after all, even quality wipers are relatively inexpensive and extremely easy to install, not to mention that having a clear view of any potential hazards could well save your life.
Have it serviced
Regardless of how much or how little adventuring you have done this summer, those hot and bright conditions will have taken a toll on your vehicle; therefore, now is the time to have your mechanic make sure that all is well. Aside from the importance of spotting any potential problems before they get worse, having all of those vital fluids changed and topped up will have your ride ready to roar. Be sure to have your battery tested as well, as hot summer conditions can undermine its ability to hold a charge, especially if your battery is more than a couple of years old.
Ready your treads
Fall also brings with it a significant drop in temperature and as soon as it is consistently cooler than 7°C where you live it is time to switch back over to your winter treads. Before you do so, take some time to give each of those winter treads a thorough inspection, keeping a close eye out for any signs of damage. Ideally, those treads should also be at least 5/32” deep and free from any cracks, cuts, and bald spots. As a general rule, it is also wise to replace your tires every 5-6 years no matter what, because being made from natural rubber means that they will naturally degrade.
Deal with rust
Conduct a thorough inspection of the body of your vehicle and take note of any potential signs of rust, such as blisters, bulges, and bubbling, because nothing will undermine a vehicle’s looks, value, and structural integrity quite like corrosion. If you find anything even slightly concerning, have your mechanic take a look at it for you ASAP, and have any issues dealt with before they grow into larger and more expensive problems.
