There is no better way to make the most of winter this year than by heading out to a festival or two and there is no better place to do so than right here in Alberta. Whether you like to ski, skate, snowboard, or just cozy up next to the fire with your favourite beverage, you are in for a real treat, because the following Albertan winter festivals will certainly not disappoint.
Ice Magic Festival – Lake Louise (January 17 – 27, 2019)
Lake Louise will play host to one of Canada’s most popular winter events again this year when ice carvers descend from all over the world to create some of the most beautiful and artistic creations you’ll ever see. Over 34 hours carvers will work their magic on massive 300lb blocks of ice while competing for a wide range of titles, including Carver’s Choice, People’s Choice, and Speed Carving Champion.
Big Winter Classic – Calgary (January 24 – 27, 2019)
This 4-day winter festival describes itself as “A really, really fun party…in the middle of winter” and it more than lives up to the hype. Boasting everything from art, music, and local craft beer through to live theatre and delicious food, this increasingly popular event is a must for anyone whose idea of winter fun is dancing outdoors under a patio heater. Another of its many huge highlights is the Big Studio, which showcases some of Alberta’s many amazing up and coming artists.
Ice on Whyte Festival – Edmonton (January 24 – 27 and January 31 – February 4, 2019)
Whyte Avenue will be the place to be once again this winter where one of Canada’s best winter festivals will be taking centre stage. Warm up at the Ice Bar, fill up with a bowl or two at the Whiskey Stew Off, learn how to ice carve, or sit back and watch the experts battle it out in the International Ice Carving Competition. Better yet, the Winter Painting Party provides a marvellous opportunity to get creative, the Blues on Whyte line-up is guaranteed to have you busting a move, and you’ll find a wide range of entertainment to suit the entire family.
Silver Skate – Edmonton (February 8 – 18, 2019)
If you like to skate you will love this festival, which in 2018 attracted an impressive 105,000 people from all over the world. This 10-day family-friendly event takes place at Hawrelak Park and includes everything from snow sculpting, skate racing, and sleigh rides through to live music and theatrical performances. It also features the ever-popular Cree Winter Camp where you can relax by the fire and enjoy some mouth-watering fresh cooked bannock.
